For Leah, design and strategy make a perfect pair. She believes great design goes beyond logos, brochures and websites. It builds a bridge to people. It takes complex ideas and makes them memorable, meaningful and possibly even beautiful. It’s a powerful tool with endless opportunities. Leah thinks about how to make something possible, and then she does it.

What do you enjoy about the marketing and communications field?

This is the most exciting time I can imagine to be doing this work. We’re in the midst of a communications revolution that is changing every day. Once I started doing design work, I didn’t feel you could separate the implications from the work. More and more, I became interested in an integrated approach. We have an opportunity to shape where this revolution is going, and a responsibility to bring in ethics and meaning.

What keeps you busy when you’re not in the office?

All my spare time is devoted to my husband and our daughter Soren. That, for me, is the underlying motivation for everything I do. Even at this age I like to show her what I work on and get her thoughts. I want my daughter to be proud of me and the work I do—even if she doesn’t really understand it at this point.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

One time, my husband texted me, “Every time I hear Joan Jett, I think of you.” And I loved that. I don’t think I’m like her—she’s such a bad@$$—but I’m glad she makes him think of me.
