The Writing Professor
Office Green Thumb
Jess is as authentic a person as you’ll ever meet. She cares. About clients. About nature. About how a team member’s Tuesday evening was. About the legacy and impact of Star Wars. Jess is a prime example of a DH zealot because business is personal to her – she’s going to give everything she has to every single project.
What makes you passionate about your job?
I’m a people person (maybe because I was born a Libra in the Year of the Dog), so DH with our wonderful team and our cool clients is perfect. And I really just like the work, brainstorming the concept or developing the campaign plan. I love anything to do with writing and editing. There are few things more satisfying than 1) figuring out what needs to be communicated and 2) communicating it—that feeling when you’ve said exactly what you meant to say. I love that.
What keeps you busy when you’re not in the office helping clients?
I just love writing in general—even in my spare time. I love to paint (watercolors: expressionist, colorful, animal subjects). I like to take long walks along the river. I like the Symphony and The Modern Theater. I love good conversation and spending time with friends. I have a great community of people in Spokane that keeps my life rich and vibrant.
What’s the best compliment you ever received?
In a poetry class I took in college, the professor had us all give each other nicknames on the last day. When it came to my turn, the class paused. Finally one guy said, “You don’t get a nickname. You can’t be categorized.” I thought that was pretty cool.
