What is your favorite thing about your job?

Without a doubt the diversity of what we do. In the past three or four years in particular, we’ve seen a huge amount of change and opportunity in the industry. The convergence of advertising, marketing, PR, social media, digital and design thinking is more significant than a lot of people realize. What we do has evolved into a core business strategy for our clients versus years ago when the industry as a whole was viewed as more of a service that companies may or may not need.

What do you do to keep your thinking fresh and creative?

I’ve always read and listened and asked questions about how others think and approach their work or industries. I think there’s a tendency, especially now when there’s so much industry-specific information available, to get way too narrow in your thinking. It’s really important to learn and get inspired by things from outside the day-to-day. I was at a big STEM conference recently and sat next to a pretty accomplished physicist. We ended up having a fascinating discussion about creativity and critical thinking—the parallels and also the differences in how we think about our work and the world that surrounds us. It was fantastic. In a similar vein, it’s part of why I value IPREX (the global network DH is a part of) so much. I love the perspective I get about how agency owners from around the world think about the future of our industry, about politics and about social change.

Is there something you constantly lose at your house or anywhere?

A better question in my case is whether there’s anything I don’t misplace. Especially at home, my wife and daughter are so hyper-organized. There’s a place for everything and a way of going through the day-to-day motions. I aspire to their level of rigor, but hey, we all have our challenges. I like to think that I contribute to our super-modern house by making it feel a bit more lived-in.
