JIM AND CHER DESAUTEL, THE ORIGINAL ZEALOTS AND FOUNDERS OF DH, are starting a scholarship for communications students at Eastern Washington University (EWU).

Both EWU alumni (and huge Eagles fans), Jim and Cher decided to start a scholarship as a way to acknowledge all the opportunities their first-class Eastern education gave them. Both were the first people in their families to receive college educations and graduate degrees. In fact, EWU prides itself on helping first-generation students succeed by providing mentoring support, financial aid and other services.

Jim and Cher wanted to pass on the good fortune they’ve enjoyed to future generations by ensuring students can access affordable, high quality degrees. Jim is a tribal member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, and he and Cher especially want to help Native students to ensure student population diversity.

“We believe the school, the faculty, the support and guidance we received set us firmly on the successful path we enjoy,” say Jim and Cher. “As working students, the flexibility and accessibility were vital to us obtaining our degrees.”

The Desautels have a goal of fully funding their scholarship at $25,000. DH is helping them kick off the fundraising with $2,500 as a match to individual donations.

Jim and Cher started DH (then called Desautel Communications & Marketing) out of their basement in 1996, providing public relations and marketing services to three clients. Since then, the firm has grown to a 26-member team. In 2016, Jim and Cher stepped away from the firm, though they still provide counsel as needed. And, of course, they set the tone for DH’s culture of thoughtfulness, inspiration and passion that still exists today.

“We owe so much to Jim and Cher,” says Michelle Hege, President and CEO of DH. They have influenced so many communicators—not just at DH but all across our region—with their passion, dedication and integrity.

We hope you’ll join us in making a contribution to future communicators! If you are interested in supporting Jim and Cher’s EWU Scholarship, you can donate at the link below. The deadline is Giving Tuesday, November 27. #GivingJoyDay
