A conversation with Shireen Khinda
Senior Account Executive
A FEW YEARS AGO we were fortunate enough to have Shireen as an intern—and we’re lucky enough that she returned to us full-time at the beginning of this year! Though she sits at the front desk, she’s often behind the scenes, helping us keep everything running smoothly. Meet Shireen!
Shireen: I was born and raised in Spokane, and I love it here. I went to Jefferson Elementary, Sacajawea Middle School, and then to LC (Go Tigers!). I joke that my education “went downhill” because I rolled downtown to Gonzaga where I studied Public Relations and Political Science. I am the first in my family to go to a four-year college in the United States. My parents were both born in Punjab, India, and their ambition and dedication definitely rubbed off on me. I feel so lucky to be around them, as well as all the talented individuals at DH!
How did you choose a career in PR?
Shireen: I was flipping through majors in the college catalog as a sophomore, searching for something that would allow me to work with others and be creative. I had political science in my mind as a major, but there were so many class offerings in the public relations section that seemed challenging and exciting to me, like Media Law, Advanced Public Speaking, and other project-based courses that I couldn’t pass up.
What brought you to DH?
Shireen: I applied to be an intern at DH after graduating from GU in 2013. I wanted to see what agency life was like. I also worked with DH in a part-time and freelance capacity for over a year. I left for a bit to help out my family’s business and rejoined DH full time. I joke that I was with DH in spirit the whole time!
What has been your favorite project so far?
Shireen: I love the challenging projects I’m handed, whether compiling survey research responses or developing media reports. I like to be involved in work for clients in various sectors, so I can get a glimpse into trends in different industries.
What do you do when you’re not in the office?
Shireen: My family has owned a restaurant in Spokane for 15 years, and it is like my second home. It keeps me pretty busy outside of the office. But hey, it’s like a prolonged social hour when I’m there, and I get free food and hugs!
Now for some fun questions. Are you psychic in any way?
Shireen: I’m not sure, but I have a pretty good sense of direction and sense of where something might be when it is missing.
What is your favorite TV show?
Shireen: House of Cards. It’s fascinating how that show can get you to root for the bad guys. I want them to win, even though what they’re doing is so clearly wrong.
Dragons or Dinosaurs?
DH: Do you love or hate Facebook?
Shireen: I usually like Facebook, but the serial “thankfulness” posts that people do around Thanksgiving drive me nuts.
What is your favorite holiday?
Shireen: When you grow up in the food service industry, you don’t enjoy holidays. Or weekends. #truth
